MOPS Mom Spotlight: Kirsten Van Maurice

This girl. She follows Christ, loves the Bible and her family. She’s chasing her artistic dream and relishing in her babes. She counts bottles poppin’ (the beer kind), the sound of her husband’s keys in the door at night, the words “please” and ‘“thank you” from the mouths of her babes, and her coffee pot kicking on as her favorite sounds. Love her yet? Okay, another anecdote. Her family’s favorite story to tell around the campfire is of our spotlight at her brother’s rehearsal dinner. She was committed to the spirit of the night and making merry with her family. She may have enjoyed one too many toasts to the happy couple and found herself worshiping the porcelain god that night. Another one still? If she were secluded on a desert island, she would want her husband with her. No talking, no kids. Just sleeping and sex… and a margarita. Now you love her. Meet Kirsten Van Mourick. She is mom to Ryder Dean, 3 and Jack Cline, 1. She chased her husband here from Santa Barbara, and may or may not have forced him to marry her… Let’s put her in the go-getter category.

Her resume not only boasts mom of two, but also artiste. It was on a trip to Italy that she found her love of painting and of Christ. Kirsten’s studies took her aboard where she immersed herself in her surroundings. Italy is a place that recharges her spiritually, artistically and physically. Her passion for art came a bit later in her studies and she actually graduated with her MFA while nine months pregnant! Now, she finds herself with the challenge of balancing her passion for art with motherhood. She recognizes that she is a better mom when she carves out time for her art, honoring the talent that God has given her.

The advice she would give to other moms is to extend the same grace to oneself that Christ laid upon us. The expectation of perfection is generally self-inflicted. People aren’t looking for or expecting perfection from one another. Live life and love as generously as you can. Since we can’t be perfect, we may as well be teachable.

Kirsten’s elevator pitch in her own words: I am so freaking blessed. I have a husband who is (by far) prettier than me, who supports my insanely unprofitable artistic dreams, and completely gets my specific brand of crazy. My two boys are well behaved...IF you keep them moving almost constantly, but I would rather they be active than boring. They teach me a ton; they show me how to really see, and remind me daily that I am not in control. This is a season where I swing back and forth between stressed and blessed so quickly and constantly that it makes me dizzy!

Stop by the Pegasus table and let Kirsten feel the love.
