MOPS Mom Spotlight: Laura Helmick
Our MOPS Spotlight this week was once sprayed by an elephant when she was four years old. It wasn’t a little spritz, it was a fire-hydrant sized trunkful of water that spanned from the top of her head to the tips of her toes. As if that wasn’t enough for a four year old, the sheer force of the stream knocked her flat out on her back. Meet Laura Helmick.
Laura has been turning ordinary situations (a visit to the zoo) into extraordinary tales (being leveled by an elephant’s trunk) since she was a child. Laura loves to sew (ordinary), and has taken this task and turned it into a thriving business (extraordinary). She fashions stylish clothes for little ones, making the next generation a whole lot cuter than we ever were. Check out her company, Little Arrows to experience the adorableness that she offers.
Laura’s company does more than help babies and toddlers find their sartorialist voice. She donates 15% of every transaction to GoGoGrandmothers. GoGoGrandmothers is a non profit organization that is dedicated to the support of Africa’s AIDS orphans. The support raised through this ministry goes to the grandmothers who are left caring for the children whose parents have died from AIDS. (Extraordinary)
Laura is mom to her 16 month old son, River, who’s probably already winning best dressed in toddler circles. She is a Southern California native who prefers vacuuming over dishes or laundry (ordinary). She LOVES vacuuming (extraordinary). Don’t ask us, ask her… Her favorite sound is her son’s monkey impression, and if she could relive a moment from her youth, it would be enjoying a disney character shaped popsicle on a hot summer day. She sounds pretty amazing, right? Just don’t ask her to cook for you. It’s a talent she hasn’t yet mastered, and is floored by people who are able to whip up meals with little thought. Cooking with ease is on her list of things to learn.
Be sure to stop and say hi to Laura, just not all at once. She’s at the Pegasus table, or likely under it. She’s a self-proclaimed introvert dying from the attention she’s getting right now.
